POSITION DESCRIPTION Title: Protection Assistant Location: Sana’a Start of Contract & Duration: 1st July 2014 – 3 months BACKGROUND Yemen is increasingly becoming a country of destination for Syrians who are fleeing the conflict in their own country. The Ministry of the Interior reports that more than 5,000 individuals arrived in 2012, with a further 9,350 arriving in the first 9 months of 2013. However, these figures are incomplete and unverified, and it is believed that up to 25,000 people may now be living in Yemen, predominantly in urban areas. The data depicting the scale of the needs of the Syrian population in Yemen are also limited and, as a result, new arrivals have received almost no recognition or support, either from the government or from the humanitarian community. DRC, working in partnership with CARE, has received funding to conduct a profiling exercise in the Syrian communities in Sana’a, Taiz and Aden. This multi-sector assessment will provide the data required to support the development of needs-led programming. PURPOSE Working under the supervision of the Protection Officer, the Protection Assistant must ensure that individuals requiring protection are correctly identified and provided with appropriate support. The Protection Assistant will work as part of the data collection team, providing a protection focus and ensuring that all protection incidents are appropriately recorded and referred on. The Protection Assistant will work with the Protection Officer to ensure that protection cases are satisfactorily addressed, and will provide follow up monitoring. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Protection profiling • Working as part of the data collection team to provide a strong awareness of protection issues during the profiling exercise • Assessing the vulnerability of households and individuals encountered during the profiling exercise • Documenting and highlighting any protection cases encountered and referring them on to the Protection Officer and Project Manager Referral and case management • Ensuring that all identified protection cases are documented appropriately, and that the information is handled with confidentiality and sensitivity • Supporting the Protection Officer to identify appropriate referral options for protection cases • Ensuring that the referred protection cases are resolved affectively and in a timely manner, under the supervision of the Protection Officer • Discussing protection concerns and incidents with the Protection Officer and Project Manager • Other duties as required by the supervisor REPORTING ARRANGEMENTS Reporting to the Protection Officer.
