Job ID/Title :FAO Economist Specialist Brand :FAO Application Deadline :30-Apr-14 Duty Station :East Jerusalem Languages Required :Arabic, English,     Duration of Initial Contract : One year Background: Under the overall supervision of the FAO WBGS Head of Office, the incumbent, as a member of a multidisciplinary team, will be responsible for the planning and preparation of analytical appraisals of the current and prospective food security situation in West Bank and Gaza strip, and for the analysis and evaluation of proposals and FAO programme. He or she maintains a strategic network with colleagues from FAO HQs and Regional Offices, UN agencies, IFIs, Government officials, multilateral and bilateral donors and civil society. Description of Responsibilities: Summary of key functions: -Monitor continuouslythecrop and food security situation, analyzing all types of information bearing on food production, trade, stocks, demand and prices; -Carry out analysis on food security and vulnerability-related issues; -Participate on food security assessments in areas impending food crisis; -Build and support networks at country and regional levels to assure the regular flow of food security related information and provide technical support on food security monitoring and assessment methods; -Recommends measures to armonize food aid with assistance in recovery and rehabilitation of agricultural production vis-à-vis natural/man-made disasters; -Maintain close collaboration with the WFP, other UN Agencies and Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) by facilitating exchange of critical information and validate findings and recommendations on food security matters; -Assist in the identification and preparation of projects and programmes; -Evaluate performance of projects or programmes during implementation and their impact after completion; -Perform other duties as and when required. Impact of Results The key results of the post are to strengthen FAO’s contribution to the national policy dialogue and enhance the policy impact of FAO programmes and projects. In particular, the key results have an impact on the design of programmes. Level 1.2: -Fundamental knowledge of own discipline -Understands and applies fundamental concepts and principles of a professional discipline or technical specialty relating to the position -Possesses basic knowledge of organizational policies and procedures relating to the position and applies them consistently in work tasks -Analyzes the requirements and synthesizes proposals -Strives to keep job knowledge up-to-date through self-directed study and other means of learning -Demonstrates good knowledge of information technology and applies it in work assignments -Creating Visibility for FAO /Supporting FAO’s Capacity to Advocate Level 1.2: -Research and data analysis -Maintains networks and knowledge assets for use in visibility and image activities -Makes recommendations on the design and delivery of image activities -Global Leadership and Advocacy for FAO’s Goals Level 1.2.: -Preparing information for global advocacy -Identifies and communicates relevant information for advocacy for FAO’s goals for a variety of audiences -Maintains a functioning network of contacts in the media and civil society, to promote a better understanding of FAO’s mandate and to support advocacy efforts -Conceptual Innovation in the Provision of Technical Expertise Level 1.2: -Research and analysis -Keeps updated in his/her area of substantive expertise -Analyses ongoing trends, evolving needs and emerging issues to identify appropriate responses for capacity building -Client Orientation Level 1.2: -Establishing effective client relationships -Researches potential solutions to internal and external client needs and reports back in a timely, succinct and appropriate fashion -Organizes and prioritizes work schedule to meet client needs and deadlines -Establishes, builds and sustains effective relationships within the work unit and with internal and external clients Core Competencies: -Demonstrating/safeguarding ethics and integrity -Demonstrate corporate knowledge and sound judgment -Self-development, initiative-taking -Acting as a team player and facilitating team work -Facilitating and encouraging open communication in the team, communicating effectively -Creating synergies through self-control -Managing conflict -Learning and sharing knowledge and encourage the learning of others.
