The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is a private, independent, non-government organisation working with refugees, asylum seekers and other migrants. DRC Yemen operates within a broader regional context including the Horn of Africa. Duty Station: Hajja (Abs), Hodeida, Taiz. Duration: 3 months probation period, and upon a successful evaluation, the position may be extended beyond 3 months depending on the availability of funds. Key Responsibilities: The position is a critical one within the DRC Yemen program. He will be responsible to ensure all information received from Ethiopian new arrivals is translated accurately and in a professional manner. • Translates oral conversations, discussions and interviews between Protection Monitoring Staff, Registration Staff and refugees/asylum seekers; • Maintains highest level of confidentiality and discretion at all times. • Translates from newspapers, written reports, magazines, and other written materials. • Responds to queries relating to the area of responsibility. • Liaise closely with the field supervisor (Protection Monitoring Officer) to ensure all translation duties are completed in a timely manner. • Translates and interprets for other DRC staff as required. • Performs other duties as requested by field supervisor and relevant managers. Qualifications: • At least two years of professional experience doing similar work, and with field experience. • Good command of Oromo/Amharic/Tigre/Afar, and Arabic and English is critical. Somali language skills will be an asset. • Basic computer skills, MS Word and MS Excel. • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, especially with people from different cultural backgrounds. • Good understanding of refugee and protection-related issues is a strong advantage. • Capable of maintaining objectivity and neutrality while working with refugees/asylum seekers. • Able to work under pressure and willing to work under harsh field conditions. • Able to be flexible and respond to unexpected requests. • Ability to work in a close team environment.
