"Monitor, investigate and study corrosion status of plant equipment, structures, pipelines and related facilities and recommend appropriate action for corrosion protection in order to safeguard plant and equipment and minimize deterioration.
The job reports to the Lead Engineer Inspection. The jobholder is responsible to monitor, investigate and recommend appropriate measures to protect against corrosion of equipment, pipelines, structures and related facilities. The jobholder is exposed to normal plant conditions – fumes, heat, noise, high voltage, high speed rotating equipment, etc."
Corrosion Inspection:
§ Receive reports from operations and maintenance relating to corrosion status of plant equipment, structures, pipelines and related facilities and visit site to investigate.
§ Identify nature, cause and extent of corrosion via visual observation and or use of specialized tools and equipment.
§ Collect corrosion products/deposits for analysis to support reaching a definitive decision on the cause and nature of the corrosion.
§ Perform non-destructive testing on site and coordinate with related parties to ensure safety of personnel and assets.
Prepare report on findings and raise recommendations to supervisor and related departments for further action and implementation.
Corrosion Monitoring:
§ Visit site and monitor reported corroded area using specialized tools and equipment and visual observation to determine status and effect of the corrosion on the equipment, structures, coatings, linings, etc.
§ Prepare report on findings and refer recommendations to supervisor and related parties for needed action.
§ Supervise, coordinate and evaluate the work of contractors involved in carrying out special corrosion monitoring and studies.
Corrosion Control:
§ Study suitability of materials and chemicals and recommend changes to environment that can be controlled such as chemical injections, adding corrosion inhibitors, oxygen scavengers and other chemicals to ensure that corrosion action is minimized. Includes applying cathode protection by impressing electric current or sacrificing anodes.
§ Design modifications to affected areas with a view to minimizing progress of the corrosive processes.
Projects:
§ Prepare documents, designs, technical specifications and scope of work for contracts related to corrosion engineering.
§ Analyze and evaluate vendors’ qualifications and submitted bids in respect of Marafiq’s work and recommend acceptance or rejection of the same.
§ Supervise work of contractors and coordinate their activities as required.
§ Participate in testing and commissioning of installed projects to ensure corrosion monitoring and control systems meet contractual specifications and requirements.
Cost Control:
§ Monitor the financial performance of a given area of activity versus budgets so that areas of unsatisfactory performance are identified and rectified promptly and potential performance improvement opportunities are capitalised upon.
Policies & Procedures:
§ Recommend improvements to departmental procedure and direct the implementation of instructions and controls covering a specific area of Corrosion Engineering activity so that all relevant procedural/legislative requirements are fulfilled while delivering a quality, cost-effective service to customers.
Safety, Quality & Environment:
§ Ensure compliance to all relevant safety, quality and environmental management procedures and controls within a defined area of Corrosion Engineering activity to guarantee employee safety, legislative compliance, delivery of high quality products/service and a responsible environmental attitude. Minimum Qualifications:
§ University degree in Mechanical, Metallurgy or Chemical Engineering.
Minimum Experience:
§ 6 years’ corrosion or process engineering experience in a heavy industrial or utilities environment.
§ Experience of acting as an internal technical consultant and liaising with Operations & Maintenance, Design and Engineering departments to provide specific technical input to broader projects or ongoing operations.
§ Experience of technical evaluation of design options to ensure that potential design solutions do not cause corrosive problems.
Job-Specific Skills:
§ Expert knowledge on theoretical and practical knowledge of corrosion chemistry.
§ Expert knowledge of corrosion control techniques and practices.
§ Broad understanding of global developments in corrosion control technology and theory.
§ Deep knowledge of all relevant international engineering standards and codes of practice.
