MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- The Deputy Headmistress will go about their duties with honesty and integrity and ensure the
nursery needs are always met and take precedence
- The Deputy Headmistress must at all times ensure the safety, care, welfare and happiness of
the children in the nursery. They must ensure all children have access to resources, equipment,
activities and learning opportunities to reach their full development and potential.
- Ensure that the environments throughout the nursery are well set out and that resources are
excitingly presented and accessible.

- The Deputy Headmistress must be aware any children in their care with special needs
(including special educational needs and disabilities) and is proactive in ensuring appropriate
action is taken to promote the welfare and development of those children within the nursery.
- The Deputy Headmistress must ensure that all adults working and looking after children in the
nursery are able to put the appropriate procedures for the Safeguarding of Children
- Supervise and support all staff across the nursery to provide high quality interaction, which
extends children’s learning and thinking.
- Oversee and operate a programme of suitable learning and play activities in line with EYFS, to
foster the growth, happiness and development of every individual child.
- Support staff in the development and maintenance of planning, observation and assessment,
procedures which take account of children’s individual needs and interests.
- Ensure that all children across the nursery have an accurate, up to date record of their
learning and achievements.
- Lead and implement positive management of children’s behaviour across the nursery. Provide
support and expertise to ensure that all staff are.
- The Deputy Headmistress's main role is to support the Manager in all aspects of Nursery
matters. They must be conversant with all EBN Policies and Procedures, the Job Description of
the Headmistress and all other staff, and must be able to manage the nursery is the absence
of the Headmistress. They must work as part of the Staff Team and liaise between the Staff
and the Headmistress.
- The Deputy must work with the Headmistress to ensure the nursery complies with the Early
Years Foundation Stage Statutory Framework. They must ensure good practice as set out in
the EYFS Practice Guidance and they must ensure compliance with all relevant statutory
regulations, for example, Health and Safety Law and Employment Law. When Deputising, the
Deputy Headmistress must execute the responsibilities of a Nursery Headmistress according
to all lawful and ethical standards. The Manager has responsibility for the nursery, including
out-of-hours, if necessary
- At all times the Deputy Headmistress must display a high level of enthusiasm, loyalty and
motivation and must adhere to the correct policies and ethos of EBN. They must promote equal
opportunities for all. They must at all times promote the good name of EBN. They must ensure abide by the correct dress code. They must be a role model of good practice.
- They must ensure employment of the staff throughout the day, by way of staff rotas. They
must be able to ensure staff ratios and the supply of supply staff to cover holidays and
sickness where applicable.
- In consultation with the Headmistress, the Deputy must strive to develop loyalty and
commitment of parents, and build a relationship of trust with them and ensure their
satisfaction with the nursery service. The Headmistress must ensure their practice is
regularly communicated to parents and parents are invited to play an active role in their
children’s care and learning. They must also meet parents’ reasonable needs as appropriate.
They must ensure communication of policies and good practice to parents, and make sure they
are aware of new developments. In consultation with the Headmistress, the Deputy must be
proactive and seek to resolve parents concerns and complaints promptly and confidentially.
- In consultation with the Headmistress, the Deputy must market the nursery as appropriate
with a view to increasing and maintaining populations to 100%, and make the nursery as viable
as possible. The Deputy should support the Headmistress in managing nursery budgets
carefully and ensure efficient use of nursery resources, for example, bank staff, consumables
and equipment.
- The Deputy must accommodate visitors and show them around the nursery. They must take new
bookings and collect deposits. They must also be available to accommodate visitors from
outside agencies and deal with their queries. The Deputy must ensure the correct information
and ethos of EBN is conveyed to all visitors, and they must ensure a good impression is made to
all people who come through the door. At all times the Deputy must be courteous and helpful.
- Planning and Development of the nursery the Deputy must attend regular nursery staff
meetings at least every 4 - 6 six weeks out of normal hours of work and also Management Team
meetings, and be involved with training matters. They are expected to attend relevant events,
meetings and training courses when necessary. They must show initiative when considering new
policies and ideas Job Requirements
- CACHE Level 3 necessary
- CACHE Level 5 desirable
- Three satisfactory relevant references
Person Specification
? Relevant skills in working with groups of children aged 0 - 5 years.
? The ability to support the Nursery Headmistress in all aspects of the efficient and organised
administration of Nursery matters.
? A willingness to learn the policies and procedures of EBN and to abide by the staff rules.
? An excellent understanding of children's development, their needs and the provision of positive
play.
? An ability to provide a high quality, integrated early education and childcare service which
complies with the Early Years Foundation Stage.
? The skills to supervise staff and be involved in the recruitment, induction, training, counselling
and disciplining of staff.
? An ability to work with parents and outside agencies to ensure the individual learning
requirements of children with particular needs, disabilities or those who require additional
support.
? A commitment to the theory and practice of equal opportunities.
? An awareness of health and safety issues relating to the provision of daycare.
? An ability to work on own initiative and an ability to supervise other staff members.
? An ability to communicate effectively with parents and build a relationship of trust with them.
? An ability to produce high quality reports/documents as appropriate.
? A willingness to work as part of and contribute positively to the staff team.
? An ability to provide an excellent role model of good practice to all other members of staff
? An ability to support the Nursery Management in creating a happy and welcoming nursery
setting.
? An ability and willingness to attend staff meetings, training courses and nursery parents'
